Wall Split Aircon

Wall split aircon is a practical single-zone solution for an office, shop or staff room where you want one room cooled or heated properly. Kenny Cape West supplies and services these systems across Cape Town, the Winelands and the West Coast, with support for call-outs, maintenance and installations.

Wall Split Aircon

What a wall split aircon is and where it fits

A wall split aircon has two main parts, a wall-mounted indoor unit and an outdoor condensing unit. The two are linked by refrigerant piping and electrical cable, which lets the indoor unit move cool or warm air quietly into one room without taking up floor space.

It is a good choice for single areas that need steady comfort during summer heat, winter damp, or long trading hours. Common uses include small offices, reception areas, shops, staff rooms, guard rooms and home work areas. In the Western Cape, many customers use them to keep a front shop cool in summer and dry out a closed room during coastal humidity.

These systems suit one defined room at a time. If you need to condition several rooms, a separate unit for each space or another type of system may be more suitable.

Sizes, capacities and control options

Wall split aircons are usually selected by room size, sun exposure, ceiling height and how many people use the space. A 9 000 BTU unit may suit a small office or staff room, while 12 000 BTU to 18 000 BTU is more common for larger rooms, open plan shop areas or rooms with glass frontage.

For heavier loads, such as west-facing rooms, upstairs offices, or rooms with equipment running all day, a larger capacity may be needed. Getting the size right matters because an undersized unit runs too hard and an oversized unit can cycle too often, leaving the room cold but sticky.

  • Small room: 9 000 BTU to 12 000 BTU
  • Medium room: 12 000 BTU to 18 000 BTU
  • Larger single area: 18 000 BTU to 24 000 BTU
  • Control options: remote control, timer, sleep mode, fan speed settings, dehumidify function

Some units include heating as well as cooling, which is useful for winter mornings in Cape Town, Paarl and Stellenbosch where the air can feel cold and damp at opening time.

Installation needs, power supply and piping runs

Correct installation is as important as the unit itself. The indoor unit needs a solid wall section with enough clearance for air movement, while the outdoor unit needs fresh air, drainage and a place that allows for servicing. On shops and farms we often need to plan around long pipe runs, metal roofs, tenant limits and municipal or body corporate rules.

Most wall split systems run on standard electrical supply, but the exact requirement depends on the model and size. A proper isolator, correct cabling and a dedicated circuit may be needed. In areas that experience load-shedding, it is worth checking whether the unit will start cleanly on generator or inverter supply, and whether the supply can handle the compressor load.

For the refrigerant side, the pipe length and height difference between indoor and outdoor unit must stay within the maker’s limits. Long runs can affect performance if they are not planned properly, so we measure first and avoid guesswork.

  • Indoor wall with good airflow and service access
  • Outdoor unit on wall brackets or a concrete base
  • Correct pipe size and insulated refrigerant lines
  • Drain line with proper fall to avoid water dripping back inside
  • Electrical supply checked before commissioning

How to choose the right unit for your room

When ordering a wall split aircon, the room details matter more than the brand name on the box. We look at floor size, ceiling height, heat from windows, people in the room, appliances inside the room and how the space is used. A small consulting room and a sunny corner shop can need very different capacities even if the floor area looks similar.

We also check the local conditions. A shop near the coast may need more attention to corrosion, while a farm office may need a unit that handles dust and regular cleaning. In Malmesbury and the Winelands, shutdown periods and seasonal use often mean the system must be preserved properly when the room is unused for weeks.

  • Room size in square metres
  • Window size, direction and sun exposure
  • Number of people normally in the room
  • Whether the room must cool, heat, or do both
  • Any generator or inverter backup in place
  • Distance from indoor to outdoor unit

If you are replacing an older unit, we also check the current piping, brackets and drain line before recommending a like-for-like swap or a different capacity.

Care, servicing and breakdown prevention

Wall split aircons last longer with regular cleaning and inspection. Dirty filters restrict airflow, blocked drains can cause water to drip inside the room, and clogged coils make the system work harder than it should. In coastal areas, the outdoor unit should be checked for salt build-up and corrosion. In dusty areas, coil cleaning and filter washing need to happen more often.

Our planned maintenance includes filter cleaning, coil cleaning, drain clearing, leak detection, temperature checks and general condition reporting. For businesses that cannot afford downtime, a maintenance contract is usually better than waiting for a fault. It helps catch small issues before they become an expensive compressor or fan motor problem.

During summer, a unit running all day in Cape Town or Vredenburg can need extra attention if doors stay open often or stock areas get hot. If the room starts taking longer to cool, blowing weak air or dripping water, it should be checked before the fault gets worse.

Service support across Cape Town and the Western Cape

Kenny Cape West is based in Montague Gardens and works across Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Malmesbury and Vredenburg, with call-outs for shops, offices and farm properties. We handle emergency call-outs, aircon servicing, temperature logging, seasonal start-up and shutdown preservation where needed.

For wall split systems, that means we can inspect the full installation, test pressures, clean the indoor and outdoor sections, and advise on whether a repair or replacement makes better sense. We also support businesses that need one unit fixed quickly so staff can keep working and customers stay comfortable.

If you are planning a new installation or sorting out a problem unit, send the room size, location and a few photos to callouts@kennycapewest.co.za so we can advise on the next step.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

How do I know what size wall split aircon I need?

Start with room size in square metres, then allow for windows, sun, people and equipment. A site check is the safest way to avoid buying a unit that is too small or too large.

Can a wall split aircon work during load-shedding?

It depends on the backup power available. Some units can run on generator or inverter supply if the electrical load and start-up current are suitable.

How often should a wall split aircon be serviced?

For business use, a service at least once a year is common, but dusty, coastal or high-use sites may need more frequent cleaning and inspection.
