What a compressor changeout covers
A compressor changeout is more than swapping one part for another. We remove the failed compressor, inspect the circuit, fit the replacement unit, pressure test the system and check oil levels, controls and operating temperatures before handover. If the old compressor failed because of overheating, dirty coils, blocked condensers or electrical trouble, we look at the cause as well so the new unit is not starting from the same point.
This service suits cold rooms, bottle stores, butchery fridges, packhouses and light commercial aircon systems where the rest of the installation is still serviceable. In many cases a proper changeout is cheaper than repeated repairs, especially when downtime is costing stock or spoiling produce.
Compressor sizes and replacement options
We supply and fit replacement compressors in a range of capacities to suit small holding rooms through to larger commercial systems. The right size depends on the original duty, the refrigerant used, the power supply and whether the system runs on a low, medium or higher temperature application. Matching matters. An oversized compressor can short cycle and waste power, while an undersized unit will run hot and struggle in summer conditions.
- Small single-phase units for compact cold rooms and back-up fridges
- Three-phase compressors for commercial cold rooms, packhouses and service areas
- Hermetic and semi-hermetic styles, depending on the plant layout
- Options for low temperature, medium temperature and aircon applications
- Replacements matched to existing evaporator and condenser capacity where suitable
We also check whether the old compressor failed because of a refrigerant leak, poor ventilation, blocked airflow or bad starts. A like-for-like replacement is not always enough if the operating conditions have changed over time.
Where this service suits best
Compressor failures happen more often in systems that run long hours, deal with doors opening all day or sit in dusty, salty or humid conditions. That is common in Cape Town, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Malmesbury and coastal parts of the West Coast. Shops and farms often call us when product temperatures are rising, alarms are tripping or the unit is drawing more current than normal.
This service is a good fit for cold rooms storing meat, dairy, fruit, flowers, drinks and general perishables. It also suits aircon plant rooms where the compressor has burnt out or seized after load-shedding, poor maintenance or a refrigerant loss. If the system has had repeated trips, heavy condensation or oil stains around fittings, we can assess whether a changeout is the better option.
- Retail cold rooms and prep areas
- Farm packhouses and storage rooms
- Small commercial aircon systems
- Back-up refrigeration on generators or changeover supply
Installation, power supply and refrigerant checks
Before fitting a replacement compressor we confirm the electrical supply, starting current, overload protection and isolation points. In some cases the start capacitor, contactor or control wiring also needs attention, especially after a compressor burnout. We will not fit a new unit onto a system that still has blocked pipework, moisture or acid contamination without first dealing with those issues.
Refrigerant type matters too. The replacement compressor must suit the gas in the system and the operating temperatures on site. We check for correct oil type, pipe sizes, suction return and discharge conditions, then pressure test and pull down the system before putting it back into service. For sites with generator use or unstable power, we can advise on start-up stress and protection needs. A rushed restart can damage a new compressor very quickly, so the final checks are worth doing properly.
Care after the new compressor is fitted
Once the new compressor is installed, regular servicing helps it last. That means clean coils, clear drains, correct gas charge, stable voltage and no ice build-up on the evaporator. In coastal areas, salt and humidity can push condenser temperatures up, so cleaning intervals matter more than many owners think. On farms and in dusty service yards, blocked airflow is another common cause of repeat failure.
We can include planned maintenance after the changeout, with coil cleaning, temperature logging and seasonal start-up or shutdown preservation if the room is not used every day. If a unit is left sitting through winter or during a shutdown period, basic preservation steps can save you from an expensive restart later. It is also worth checking door seals, fan motors and drain lines while the system is open.
What to check when ordering a compressor changeout
To quote correctly, we need a few details from the existing system and site. If you have the old nameplate, photos or fault history, send that through with your call-out request. Even when the old compressor is damaged beyond reading, there is usually enough on site to identify the right replacement.
- System type: cold room or aircon
- Approximate room size or cooling load
- Power supply: single-phase or three-phase
- Refrigerant type currently in use
- Original compressor model, if visible
- Reason for failure, such as burnout, seizure or loss of cooling
- Site access and urgency, especially for stock at risk
If you are in Cape Town, Montague Gardens, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Malmesbury or Vredenburg, we can arrange call-outs and schedule the work around operating hours where possible. The sooner we see the unit, the easier it is to tell whether a straight compressor swap will do the job or if there is a deeper fault needing attention.
