When an urgent cooling fault cannot wait
Emergency call-outs are for situations where cooling has failed, temperatures are rising, or a system is tripping and stopping work. We attend refrigeration and aircon breakdowns for retail stores, small plants, packhouses, farms and hospitality sites across the Western Cape, with support from our Montague Gardens base and coverage into Stellenbosch, Paarl, Malmesbury and Vredenburg.
Typical emergency work includes cold room failures, freezer room warm-up, iced-up evaporators, gas loss, electrical faults, blocked drains, fan motor issues and systems that will not start after a power interruption. In coastal areas we also see corrosion, salty air damage and control faults after wet weather. If you are losing stock, or staff cannot work in the heat, the job moves to the front of the queue.
- Cold room and freezer room breakdowns
- Aircon faults affecting shops, offices and staff areas
- Temperature drift, icing and poor cooling
- Leak checks, gas top-up assessment and compressor testing
- Drain blockages and water overflow inside the unit
What our emergency visit includes on site
An emergency visit is not just a quick look. We arrive with fault-finding tools and the parts commonly needed for urgent repairs, so the technician can confirm the cause and get the system back into service where possible. That includes checking supply voltage, current draw, thermostat or controller settings, evaporator and condenser fans, drain lines, contactors, capacitors, sensors and visible pipework for leaks.
For cold rooms, we also check door seals, panel joins, insulation damage and any signs of product load over-running the system. For aircon units, we inspect filters, indoor coils, outdoor coil condition and condensate flow. If the system needs a deeper repair, we isolate the fault and give a clear next step so you know whether it is a same-day repair, a parts return visit, or a temporary running arrangement.
- Electrical and mechanical fault diagnosis
- Temperature readings before and after attendance
- Basic leak detection and pressure checks
- Drain clearing and ice removal where safe to do so
- Written feedback on the fault and follow-up action
How the call-out process works
Our process is simple because speed matters when stock is at risk. Once you call or email callouts@kennycapewest.co.za, Charlene logs the fault details, site address and unit type, then we match the nearest available technician. For urgent breakdowns we ask for the current temperature, whether the unit is still running, and whether any breakers have tripped. That information helps us bring the right tools and reduces time on site.
On arrival the technician isolates the system safely, checks the obvious causes first, then works through the refrigeration or aircon circuit step by step. If we can restore operation immediately, we do it. If the fault needs a compressor replacement, leak repair or control component that is not on hand, we stabilise the system if possible and arrange the follow-up. You get honest feedback, not guesswork.

Turnaround across Cape Town, the Winelands and the West Coast
Turnaround depends on distance, traffic, time of day and fault severity, but we aim to respond quickly to live cooling failures in the Cape Town metro and surrounding areas. From Montague Gardens we regularly service Cape Town, Milnerton, Goodwood, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Malmesbury and Vredenburg. For farms and outlying sites, travel time is built into the dispatch plan so the right technician arrives with a proper view of the job.
For businesses that cannot afford late attendance, we recommend keeping a short fault sheet ready: unit location, model or size if known, last service date, and what happened just before the failure. During load-shedding or after a power surge, it also helps to note whether other equipment on the same circuit is affected. That saves time and gives the technician a better starting point. Small delay, big cost if stock warms up too long.
Where parts are needed, we will be straight with you on availability. Some faults can be repaired on the first visit, while others need a compressor, fan motor, relay, controller, valve or refrigerant recovery and re-commissioning. We do not promise what the site conditions or parts stock cannot support.
Pricing approach for emergency work
Emergency pricing is based on call-out distance, attendance time, fault complexity, after-hours timing and any parts required. We quote clearly before larger work starts, and if the fault is simple enough to complete on site, you pay for the visit and repair time only. For outlying areas and farm sites, we factor travel and access so there are no surprises when the invoice arrives.
We keep pricing practical: no inflated extras for a basic fault finding job, but also no cutting corners when a cold room needs proper recovery. If a site needs urgent temporary support while waiting for parts, we explain the cost of that interim step and whether it protects stock long enough to be worthwhile. For repeat clients on maintenance contracts, emergency attendance can often be prioritised faster because we already know the equipment history.
- Clear call-out and labour structure
- Parts charged only when needed and approved
- After-hours and public holiday rates explained upfront
- Options for temporary recovery vs full repair
- Contract clients can request priority response
Keeping emergency breakdowns from repeating
Emergency visits work best when they feed into a proper maintenance plan. A lot of urgent failures start with blocked drains, dirty coils, low refrigerant charge, worn contactors or fans, or systems that were never shut down and preserved correctly during off-season periods. For cold rooms on farms and in shops, we recommend scheduled checks every 3 months for heavy-use sites and every 6 months for lighter-duty equipment.
Aircon units usually need filter cleaning, coil cleaning and condensate drain checks before the hot season, especially in coastal humidity where dirt and salt build-up can shorten running life. For cold rooms, temperature logging helps spot slow drift before produce or stock is lost. During the off-season, shutdown preservation protects compressors, controls and pipework from sitting idle in bad condition. Proper upkeep costs less than one emergency spoilage incident.
- Quarterly checks for high-use refrigeration
- Six-monthly servicing for lighter-duty systems
- Pre-summer aircon servicing
- Temperature logging for critical stock rooms
- Shutdown preservation for seasonal sites
