Seasonal Start-Up

Before harvest, holiday trading or the first hot spell, equipment needs a proper start-up check. Kenny Cape West prepares aircon and cold rooms for the Western Cape climate, from Cape Town to the Winelands and West Coast.

Seasonal Start-Up

What seasonal start-up covers

Seasonal Start-Up is the pre-season service that gets refrigeration and aircon ready for the months when they work the hardest. In the Western Cape that can mean summer shop traffic in Cape Town, packing sheds in the Winelands, or cold stores in West Coast towns where humidity and salt air put extra strain on equipment. We check the units before the busy period starts, so you are not waiting on a repair while stock is moving or guests are arriving.

The service is suited to split aircon systems, package units, walk-in cold rooms, prep rooms and product holding areas. It is especially useful after a long shutdown, after winter idling, or before a change in operating hours. We look for worn parts, blocked drainage, poor airflow, low refrigerant pressure and electrical issues that can lead to short cycling or high running costs.

  • Pre-season inspection for aircon and cold-room equipment
  • Cleaning of filters, coils and drainage paths
  • Electrical checks and operating test under load
  • Defrost and temperature control review where fitted

What we check on site

Our technicians work through the unit from the obvious items to the small faults that cause repeat call-outs. That includes the indoor coil, outdoor condenser, fan operation, contactors, isolators, insulation on pipe runs and the condition of drain pans. Where needed we also check thermostat placement, temperature probes and controller settings. For cold rooms, we confirm door seals, hinges, closers and any signs of moisture around the panels.

We also watch for problems common in our area. Coastal properties can pick up corrosion around fasteners and fins. Farms near Malmesbury or Paarl often see dust build-up on coils and air filters. If a site has had load-shedding or power dips, we look for damaged start components, reset faults and timing issues. A system may still run after a power cut but not hold temperature properly, which costs more in electricity and spoilage.

  • Refrigerant pressure and visible leak indicators
  • Fan motors, belts and vibration points where applicable
  • Drain clearing and condensate flow test
  • Temperature differential checks and control response

How the service is carried out

Most start-up work begins with a site visit and a quick discussion about how the system has been used over the last season. We then isolate the equipment safely, clean the working parts, test the controls, and bring the unit back online in stages. If we find a fault that needs parts, we explain the issue clearly and quote before any extra work is done.

For shops and hospitality sites, we aim to work around trading hours where possible. For farms and cold storage, we can schedule early morning or after-hours attendance if the site needs to keep production moving. If the system needs a deeper clean or a repair before full start-up, we note that on the report so the client knows what to plan for.

  • Initial condition check and fault discussion
  • Isolation, cleaning and mechanical inspection
  • Electrical test, restart and operating checks
  • Service notes with any follow-up recommendations

Turnaround for busy sites

Turnaround depends on the size of the installation and how much cleaning or repair work is needed. A single split aircon unit can often be handled in one visit. Larger retail sites, multiple office units, or a cold room with several evaporators may need a half day or a staged visit. If the site has been idle for months, we allow extra time for testing and fault finding.

We try to keep response times practical. Based in Montague Gardens, we can reach Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Malmesbury and Vredenburg without dragging out the schedule. During peak periods, especially before harvest or the summer holiday rush, bookings fill quickly so early notice helps. If something is urgently out of temp, our call-out team can attend and then move the system into start-up once the fault is cleared.

For many clients, one good start-up visit in spring and a maintenance visit mid-season is enough to keep the plant steady. Sites with heavy dust, high door traffic or long operating hours may need a shorter check every 6 to 8 weeks.

Pricing and maintenance intervals

We price Seasonal Start-Up according to the number of units, access, cleaning required and whether the site is standard trading hours or after-hours. A small retail shop with one or two units will not be quoted the same way as a farm pack house with a cold room and multiple aircon circuits. If a site needs chemical coil cleaning, gas leak tracing, or replacement parts, those items are listed separately so the client can see exactly what is being paid for.

We usually recommend start-up work once a year before the season begins. For aircon systems used through summer, a follow-up check in the middle of peak use can help with dust build-up and condensate issues. Cold rooms serving produce, dairy or high-turnover stock may need planned maintenance every month or every second month, depending on door use, product load and the surrounding conditions. On coastal sites, shorter intervals are often worth it because salt and moisture can shorten component life.

  • Annual start-up before summer or harvest
  • 6 to 8 week checks for high-use systems
  • Monthly or bi-monthly visits for busy cold rooms
  • Extra visits after power interruptions or shutdowns

Why clients book early

A start-up done before the peak period gives you time to fix hidden faults while the pressure is still low. That matters when a store depends on aircon for customer comfort, or when a cold room must hold product temperature within a narrow range. It also helps with compliance records, since many sites want proof that equipment was checked and cleaned before trading or packing starts.

Our team handles seasonal work across the Western Cape, with support from Morne Jacobus van Wyk, Anele Mbeki, Charlene Adams, Ruan Smit, Lutho Ndlovu and Bianca Petersen. Whether the job is a small aircon check in Cape Town or a full cold-room start-up in the Winelands, the aim is the same: get the system ready, keep it running properly and avoid avoidable downtime.
